Thousands are expected to gather in Hobart to protest the proposed development of a cable car at Mount Wellington.

Organisers say the rally in the Cascade Gardens on Sunday will be attended by representatives from the tourism and environment industries as well as mountain bikers and locals.

Speakers include former Greens leader Bob Brown, independent MP Andrew Wilkie and Man Booker Prize winner Richard Flanagan.

The rally will call on the state government to revoke authority granted over the proposal.

Groups opposed to the cable car say they are concerned it could impact Tasmania's burma tourist industry and cause traffic problems.
